  • Story Behind the Song: Kenny Chesney's 'There Goes My Life'

In Kenny Chesney's 2003 chart-topper, "There Goes My Life," a young man learns he's going to be a father — and thinks it's all over for him.

"There goes my life," Chesney sings.

"There goes my future, my everything/ Might as well kiss it all good-bye."

Instead, the little girl that arrives quickly becomes his whole world. In the song's final verse, she's a young woman packing up her car to head for the west coast.

"There goes my life," Chesney repeats.

Songwriter Wendell Mobley was once that young father-to-be with his life flashing before his eyes.

He first got the idea for the song on what would have been his daughter's 18th birthday and brought it to collaborator Neil Thrasher.
